My theory of politically strategic masculine performance brings together the scholarship on gender performance and political communication to help explain elite political behavior as well as imbalanced descriptive representation. Masculinity has been a part of the larger conversation around gender and politics via candidate electability, ambition, and emergence (Nichole Bauer, Monica Schneider, Angela Bos, Danielle Thomsen, Meredith Conroy, etc.), and these conversations can be advanced by investigating masculine performances from political elite as compulsory, strategic, and dynamic.
